Mike began working in industrial automation in 1985, designing and commissioning PLC-based automation software as well as the design and development of SCADA solutions. He served as a member of Leres Software cc (1986-1991) before ending up as Research and Development Director at D Le Roux & Associates from 1991 to 1996. He assumed the role of Technical Director of Adroit Technologies in 1996 and contributed to the company’s development through changes in ownership, including its management buyout in 2002.
Throughout his career at Adroit, Mike has contributed to the development of Adroit Software and its industrial visualisation capabilities. His work includes the initial design and development of the DOS based SCADA software Turbolink and Mul-T-Link, Adroit as well as VIZNET, a visualisation framework built on Microsoft’s .NET platform. His technical experience spans SCADA configuration and engineering, Pascal and C++ development, PLC programming and communication protocols, SQL databases, scripting and web technologies.
A key area of Mike’s expertise is advanced alarm management. He was responsible for the development of Adroit’s advanced alarm management technology and personally supported its deployment at a cement plant. This work combined software development with practical analysis of plant alarms, helping customers identify nuisance alarms, reduce operator workload and use alarm data to improve operations.
Mike has also worked directly on industrial projects, including the commissioning of a networked SCADA system at Manganese Metal Company that connected eight plant areas. At PPC De Hoek, he helped set up the SCADA system and develop agents to meet the plant’s requirements. These projects reflect his experience in adapting industrial software to existing control systems and customer needs.
Mike holds a Higher National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Light Current) from Natal Technikon. He is also an Adroit Certified Engineer, with certification awarded in April 2020, and has completed training in both the basic and advanced configuration of Adroit Classic UI and SmartUI.
Following Adroit Technologies’ management changes in August 2024, Mike retained his position on the development team as well as on the board in an advisory capacity. His longstanding involvement in software development, customer projects and technical leadership provides the business with continuity and experience as its next generation of leaders develops the company’s industrial automation and software offering.
